Why you should do yoga?

I started doing yoga, a little by accident. I had just been a mom, was looking to take over the sport at home and I came across a video on YouTube. And it changed my life, but we won’t talk about it another time. Statistics show that 60% of people start practicing yoga as a result of health problems. It is often recommended as an extension of rehabilitation and strongly advised by doctors in case of stress.


Yoga through its holistic approach helps us take control of our body, our breath and then our thoughts.

What is meant by Yoga: “A complete yoga practice”

When talking about yoga, it is important to know that studies are done on a yoga practice including the physical part but also the psychic part. As I explain in the article “What style of Yoga for me?”: Yoga is a philosophy of life that understands a physical, mental and spiritual practice, native to ancient India. The term “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit “Yuj”, meaning “joint”. Thus, yoga is the practice that aims to join the mind, body and soul. In the West, yoga is still very much assimilated with asanas (postures), the “Sport/physical” part. A complete yoga practice understands:

  • The Pranayama
  • The Asanas
  • Relaxation and Meditation
  • Philosophy of life and thought

The benefits of yoga on your body and mind

I will describe in more detail the effects that yoga can have on the body and mind and explain how.

  1. Better in his body

  • Gain strength

With the physical practice of asanas or postures, we will strengthen his body. In the static positions (Hatha Yoga), the deep muscles are specifically targeted. In the dynamic positions and in Vinyasa, we work on our cardiovascular rhythm, developing many muscles and helping to the calorie expenditure. In addition, the various postures allow to work all the parts of the body and to muscle the top and the bottom of our body. and by using the weight of the body, you gain strength without gaining in volume. Bonus: By combining physical practice with relaxation and meditation, yoga also helps to regulate its weight. Stress is the first source of weight gain.

  • Improve mobility and flexibility

The sun’s greeting is a chain of 12 postures. By synchronizing breath and movement, it is a perfect warm-up that improves the mobility of the joints. With greater mobility, our body opens up and becomes more flexible. Little by little, we soften every part of the body without ever forcing it. The regularity of practice will be the key to flexibility. You have to know that the use of blocks or belts will make progress, I’ll talk about it in an article on flexibility. Many Asanas act on the spine, the central pillar of our body, which will prevent us from “blocking” our backs.   • Learn how to connect to your body

Yoga is made in consciousness and it is the big difference with sport. The focus is on the sensations and then you discover what happens in your body, you feel your muscles, your bones and you become more aware of your breathing. This approach helps us in the proprioception or perception of our nervous system or more generally of our body. For this reason, physiotherapists or physiotherapists recognize yoga as a perfect activity for rehabilitation. Yoga gives great value to breathing, relaxation and conscious realization of movements. Which is essential to recover from an injury. Connecting to your body also helps in the management of weight and its image. Becoming aware of his body, of his muscles that contract and relax and of his breathing is a tool to reconcile with his body. Being attentive to our feelings helps us to look at ourselves from within.

What I like most in my practice is this moment at the beginning of the course, where I disconnect and connect to my body and to the present moment. I repeat yoga is practiced in consciousness and forces us to be in the present moment. When one concentrates on the breath, especially in relaxation, it helps us to slow the flow of our thoughts and allows us little by little to not be in “autopilot”. By distancing oneself from our thoughts on the mat, we get better at doing it outside the carpet.

So we know each other better and are less responsive to external events. We become self-control. This reinforces a better self-image by diminishing critical thinking and comparisons.

By practicing to observe, to observe his breathing and his feelings, yoga gives us tools to be more zen. By controlling the breath and more specifically by slowing the breathing, we send signals to our body that we enter in “relaxation” mode. Through regular practice, we are able to use this breath control in everyday situations. Many studies have shown that yoga practice reduces the production of the hormone responsible for stress in our body, cortisol. Yoga is often used in therapy to overcome depression and anxiety.

  • Refocus

To refocus, is to find itself a center, an alignment between our thoughts, our body and our life. In our daily life, we are overwhelmed by a lot of information, images, noises… You feel torn from all sides, you don’t know where to give your head. Yoga allows us to be more attentive to ourselves. The concentration that yoga requires on breath and postures improves our attention. This is how we can more easily focus on ourselves and positive thoughts. We also refocus by connecting to the Earth and the energies around us. Yoga offers us anchor positions where we focus our attention on the position of our feet. We seek to connect with the Earth, it brings a sense of stability and strength. To be anchored is also to be present in the here and now, in his physical body. Other postures help to seek our balance and find our centre of gravity.   • Channel its energy

In yoga, we talk a lot of energy or prana and it is important to circulate the energy. We can compare the energies to the lymph of our bodies, if the lymph is no longer circulating, inflammations or ailments will appear in the body. We’re talking about kundalini, too. It is an energy stored at the base of our column that must be helped to get up along the Nadis and chakras. Also, when our body trembles, it is the prana that travels through our body. Feeling the energy that travels through our body in the asanas still brings us closer to our breath, to the air that comes in and out. Finally, there is a concept called “Sthira Sukha” that can be translated as “firmness and fluency”, like Yin and yang. In the asanas, by noting these opposing forces in our bodies, we realize that this allows balance. One can be both flexible and firm and what happens on the mattress helps us to accept it or to understand it in everyday life. Becoming more attentive to this notion of energy strengthens our ability to channel our energy.

  • Breathe Better

It’s often said, if you know how to breathe you can do yoga. And I’m so agreeing, breath is the basis of movement. When you focus on your inhale and exhale, you gain strength, flexibility and intensity but above all you oxygenate your body. Yoga taught me to breathe. I was able to enjoy the running and the intense efforts of other sports thanks to my yoga practice. Taking control of the breath was a key element. Because breathing is feeding our body of oxygen and allowing it to function at best. By inspiring, we let the air enter our lungs. Our diaphragm is releasing. While at the exhale, we empty our rib cage and our abdomen with the support of the diaphragm that contracts upward. Just note these going-and-comings and becoming aware of our breathing is a basic technique of relaxation. But other techniques of Pranayama (breathing control) are taught in yoga to calm the mind, balance the senses and vivify our organism. I really like the alternating respiration (Nadi Shodana or Anuloma saloma), it allows by insulating the breath in one nostril and then the other to soothe and balance our left and right brain. Learning breathing techniques to vivify or calm yourself will be very useful in your daily life, to deal with situations of stress or lower morale. This is also why yoga is often recommended for coping with stress or in cases of depression. I sincerely believe that it is a practice that can help us in our daily lives both at work, at home and in front of oneself. Yoga begins to develop in France and Switzerland, whether it is in the reports, the social networks, the courses offered in the gym etc… More and more studios are opening up in large and small towns. This craze is justified. In a society where everything goes fast, where we are all very busy, where we sit or lie the majority of the day, yoga is our Savior. And if you often see people saying that yoga saved them, that’s probably true. Physical activities are known to help them feel better and yoga begins to be recognized as “therapy” (a healing process). Indeed, many medical studies document the benefits of yoga from a physiological and psychological point of view.
